Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about our practice and your visit. If yours isn't here, get in touch and we'll be glad to help.

What should I expect at my first visit?

About an hour: an exam of your teeth, gums and jaw, X-rays if your dentist decides you need them, and time for your questions about materials, sleep or jaw pain. You leave with your options in writing, and an estimate on request.

Do you take my insurance?

We bill dental insurance and file the claim for you, and whether we are in network depends on your plan. Call us with your plan's name before you book and we will say plainly what applies. The How fees work page lists each plan type.

What if I don't have insurance?

You pay the fee for each visit, and we give you that fee in writing before treatment starts. Financing is offered by third-party lenders. Approval and terms are set by the lender.

Do you accept Medicaid or CHIP?

Call us and we will answer for your plan. We would rather tell you before you book than after your visit.

Will it hurt?

We numb the area before we begin, and you can raise a hand for a break at any time. We cannot promise you will feel nothing, and we will tell you what to expect before each step.

How often do I need X-rays and a cleaning?

Your dentist decides, based on your exam, your history and your gums. For many people a cleaning every six months works; some need to come more often.

Can you tell me what my fillings are made of?

Yes. We name the material in every plan, say what else we could use and share the manufacturer's safety sheet when you ask for it.

Should my old fillings be replaced for my health?

We replace a filling when it is cracked, leaking or decayed, not to treat a condition elsewhere in the body, and we cannot say that doing so would change how you feel. If a material worries you, ask your dentist and your physician, and we will go through it together.

Do you treat sleep apnea?

A physician diagnoses sleep apnea, usually after a sleep test. If your physician recommends an oral appliance, Dr. Salas can make and fit one, adjust it and send follow-up notes to your physician. If you only snore, we can talk through your options.

Do you treat jaw pain and clenching?

We examine your jaw joints and muscles, look at how your teeth meet and wear, and make a night guard when it makes sense. Jaw pain can have causes outside the mouth, so we refer you to a physician or a physical therapist when that seems likely.

Do you see children?

Our dentists are general dentists, and they see children. Call with your child's age and we will tell you if we are the right fit, or whether a pediatric dentist would be a better choice.

Do you offer sedation, and who gives it?

We offer local numbing, nitrous oxide and oral sedation by appointment. Your dentist gives it and your pulse and oxygen level are checked throughout. IV sedation is not offered here. The Services page explains each option.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads to your face or neck, needs 911. For a knocked-out or broken tooth, severe pain or a lost restoration, call us right away and we will tell you what to do first.

Can I get a written estimate before treatment?

Yes. Ask when you book or at your exam. The estimate lists the treatment, the number of visits and the cost, and it names the material when there is a choice.

How do I change or cancel a visit?

Call or send a message through the contact form. Tell us as early as you can, and we will find a new time.
